UTICA, NY - Remember Rocky, the owl, who was found in the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree? She’s now helping to raise money for the Stevens-Swan Humane Society.
Rocky has become somewhat of an area celebrity since she made the trip from West Oneonta to Manhattan last month. SSHS volunteer Jerry Kraus says he came up with the idea to sell coffee mugs with Rocky's picture on them for $10. All proceeds go to helping the animals.
“When I first saw Rockefeller, the owl wrapped up in that orange scarf, I said ‘oh how cute.’ Maybe we could find a way to link Rocky the owl with the animals at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society - put together a little fundraiser - and I was having my morning coffee and I said ‘Wow, how about on a coffee mug?’” said Kraus.
“Unfortunately the animals are suffering more, so our numbers are going up. We can't fundraise, yet we still have the need. Right now we have about 80 dogs, we have 150-170 cats. These animals not only are suffering due to COVID, because the public can't come in here to see them, said Jackie Romano, SSHS Board of Directors.
Kraus says the 11 ounce mugs have Rocky’s face on them with the words “Rockefeller, The Christmas Owl” on one side and “Rocky, The Oneonta Owl” on the other.
Your $10 donation will actually double to $20, as Staffworks is matching the funds. Visit RockyMug.com for more information on purchasing a mug.
