ROME, N.Y. - The Rome Sports Hall of Fame announced it's Class of 2020, Thursday, including six new members to be enshrined next summer with the 44th Annual Induction Ceremony and Banquet postponed this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Calvin Griggs, Mike Orbinati, Phyllis R. Niemi, JR Purrington, Joseph A. Ryan Jr., and Randy J. Williams make up the inductees to be honored on July 25, 2021.
Griggs was an RFA football star that played his collegiate ball at Redwood Community College and Washington State.
Orbinati, who passed away in 2010 at age 82, was a star lineman at RFA before playing in college for St. Bonaventure. He was also a longtime coach, and an athletic administrator in the Utica School District.
Niemi is a former gymnastics coach and was an owner of Valley Gymnastics.
Purrington was an RFA hockey star.
Ryan is being recognized as a contributor to Rome sports.
Williams was a three-sport standout at RFA.
The Hall of Famers were voted on by a selection committee and approved by the Hall's Board of Directors.
Also being honored next year are Terry Cawl and Tim Hogan, recipients of the 2020 Frank Clark Service Award for dedication and lontime service to Rome youth sports.
The 1981 RFA varsity football team is the Hall's recipient of the 2020 Ellie Bruce Exceptional Team of Excellence Award. The Black Knights, coached by Hall of Famer Tom Hoke, were ranked No. 1 in New York state in the 1981 season.
