ROME, N.Y. – Rome Mayor Jackie Izzo has officially announced the cancelation of the annual Honor America Days celebration this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This is the first time in 36 years the city has had to cancel the events.

This year’s festivities were scheduled for July 24 through Aug. 9, and the theme was 'Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the City of Rome.'

Planned events included a parade, Pops symphony concert and fireworks display downtown.

“Given the governor’s reopening plans for New York state with arts, recreation and entertainment activities slated for Phase 4, couple with the rules and regulation surrounding social distancing and disinfection requirements we just cannot initiate events that will invite thousands of people to participate,” said Izzo.

Many local businesses participate in the Honor America Days event each year, and Izzo says the city is grateful for their contributions.

“We also want to be sensitive to our business owners who have been so generous over the last 30-plus years with donations of money and services who now must focus their attention and resources to reopening their businesses that were forced to close to help reduce the spread of the virus. Their unwavering support has consistently made it possible to promote community pride, patriotism, our heritage and the excellent quality of life we share in Rome,” she said.

Pending further state guidance, the Honor America Days committee plans to resume the events in 2021.
