HERKIMER – The chancellor of SUNY schools met with Herkimer College students and faculty on Tuesday as part of her 64-campus tour throughout New York State.
Kristina Johnson was appointed to the position last year. She was previously an engineer who served as Under Secretary of Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy.
Johnson took questions from students and staff during her meeting on Tuesday. Her goal is to get to know the campuses, and get feedback from students and faculty on ways they can improve.
She spoke about how the state is trying to improve enrollment numbers for community colleges.
"I think what we are seeing with the Excelsior Program is an uptick now in our applications, about 9 percent of the comprehensives, and I believe three or four of the community colleges, so we’ll have to see how that converts to a metriculation in the fall. I think that we will be looking at programs that will attract more of our students to come to SUNY and come to all the campuses," Johnson said.
Johnson has toured about half of the SUNY system’s 64 campuses since taking office in September.
