NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. -- Their scissors no longer silenced by a ruthless pandemic, hair stylists are preparing to once again welcome clients into their salons this weekend, after a roughly two-month absence. Things are going to look much different from the last time they walked out of their salons.

"We know every customer has to wear a mask, we're taking appointment only, we know we have sanitation stations set up for everybody when they come in. When people arrive at the shop, they know they have to wait in their car til they can come in," says Critter Maldonado, of The Next Level Barbershop, in New Hartford.

Signs reminding clients to wear masks and practice distancing greet clients as they enter Cheveux Salon, in New Hartford. Like Maldonado, owner Lisa Frateschi invested in the usual-masks, extra cleansers and hand sanitizer. She also bought shower curtains, to hang between chairs. The investments were made amidst an nine-week absence of paychecks.

"I couldn't put a dollar amount on what it cost me, but the thing is, it cost us without making any money. We haven't made any money in, I think this is the ninth week, maybe the 10th week," says Frateschi. "In 42 years of doing hair, the longest I ever took off was maternity leave, and that was five weeks."

While she and others have done the basics-masks, distancing and sanitizing- they're still awaiting any reopening guidelines from the state that are specific to their industry.

"Every day we're looking for some kind of official guidelines. I have seen nothing."

Oneida County Executive, Anthony Picente, Jr., touched on this briefly during his daily coronavirus press briefing.

"Hopefully we'll see some guidelines, and if not, I think they understand what needs to be done," said Picente. "I'm confident they're gonna be prepared. We just need to get them open and working."

Stylists say distancing will likely cost them, financially.

"It's a huge loss of income, because we cannot juggle. We can only do one at a time, start to finish. Ususally we can do a cut and color or process in an hour in a half, now it's gonna be two hours with all the cleaning, disinfecting," says Stylist Mechell Fontaine, who works at Cheveux.
