UTICA, N.Y. – The Salvation Army of Utica held its weekly food distribution event Wednesday, at its location on Clinton Place, with the help of volunteers.
Local Salvation Army locations are holding regular food giveaways to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic. The food is handed out on a first come, first serve basis.
With these events happening each week, Capt. Michael Harrington says volunteers are always helpful, and it’s an easy process to apply.
"The Salvation Army is always looking for volunteers to help us with our food distribution and of course right now with COVID-19, we take extra steps and assuring everyone safety,” he said. “So, there is a form to fill out, a small questionnaire before service before you start the day and everything is outside, hand sanitizer, try to be social distance and wear a mask."
In addition to these food box giveaways, the Salvation Army also offers a Hearty Helpings drive-thru on Thursdays at 4 p.m., where people can pick up a prepared meal.
