UTICA, N.Y. – Tuesday was the first day of school for most local districts, so AAA and the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office came together to kick off the ‘School’s Open, Drive Carefully’ campaign at the AAA office in Utica.
The campaign goal is to remind people to be cautious when driving in school zones and stop for buses with flashing red lights.
“Very soon, thousands of children will be walking to and from school and school buses - many for the first time,” said Sheriff Maciol. “Everyone who drives has a responsibility to be especially careful during this busy time for youngsters.”
Parents should also reinforce traffic safety rules with students, like the following:
- Look all ways before crossing the street.
- Cross only at corners.
- Obey police officers, school crossing guards and traffic signals.
- Watch for turning cars.
- Be especially alert in bad weather.
- Play away from traffic.
