Buffalo, NY - Thirty-nine and counting.
That is the rising number of NFL players who are choosing to opt-out of the upcoming season.
Today, Buffalo Bills cornerback E.J Gaines becomes one of the latest players to do so.
Gaines informed that team that he will be sitting out due to the coronavirus pandemic joining teammate defensive tackle Star Lotulelei.
This offseason, Gaines re-signed a one-year $910,000 contract with the Bills and after missing all of last season, would have been part of their secondary rotation.
High-risk players could opt out and receive a $350,000 stipend, while those less at risk receive a $150,000 stipend, which Gaines will receive. Players can also opt out later in the season in the case that a family member becomes sick.
The NFL regular season is set to kick off Thursday, September 10.
