SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The interscholastic sports picture is getting a little more clear locally as as Section III provided an update for plans in the 2020-21 academic year, Thursday.
The section, which includes schools from Oneida, Herkimer, Madison, Otsego, Lewis, Jefferson, Onondaga, and Cayuga Counties announced it's Athletic Council has voted to approve the dates of the winter, fall II and spring sports seasons.
The tentative dates are as follows:
Winter sports: December 14, 2020 - February 28, 2021
- Basketball*, Ice Hockey*, Boys Swimming & Diving, Bowling, Competitive Cheerleading*, Rifle, Wrestling*, Winter Volleyball*, Skiing
Fall II sports: March 1, 2021 - April 30, 2021
- Football*, Soccer, Girls Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball*, Competitive Cheerleading*, Field Hockey, Girls Swimming & Diving, Boys Golf, Gymnastics
Spring sports: April 19, 2021 - June 30, 2021
- Lacrosse*, Baseball, Softball, Boys Tennis, Track & Field, Golf
The start date for winter sports is a two week delay from the New York State Public High School Athletic Association's (NYSPHSAA) previously stated start of November 30.
The council voted to postpone the winter indoor track and field season, and has not indicated a if and when that season would be held.
Section III also announced that no sectional tournaments will be held in either the winter or fall II sports seasons. A decision regarding spring sports sectionals will be made at a later date.
There are still hurdles to clear despite the dates being determined, however. Current New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) guidance states that high-risk sports (marked by * above) may practice, but not engage in interscholastic competition at this time.
Section III and its member schools will continue to wait for further guidance from the NYSPHSAA, Governor's office and NYSDOH to determine when these high-risk sports can compete.
