HERKIMER, N.Y. (UPDATED) – Two people were airlifted to separate hospitals after a serious crash on South Washington Street in the village of Herkimer Thursday evening.
New York State Police say a trooper stopped 26-year-old Dakota L. Mander, of Utica, on West Smith Street for a loud exhaust. As the trooper was walking up to the vehicle, police say Mander took off and drove through the stop sign at the intersection with East Steele and South Washington streets, before crashing into a Jeep driven by 63-year-old Felicia A. Mosher, of Little Falls.
The Jeep rolled over onto its roof after the impact, and Mander’s vehicle smashed against a building.
Two helicopters were called to the scene. Mander was airlifted to Albany Medical Center and Mosher was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.
Police say both Mander and Mosher suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, but police say charges against Mander are pending.
