New Hartford, N.Y. - Small businesses play a vital role in the American economy, and on Saturday, small businesses across the country got a big boost from American shoppers.
The 9th annual Small Business Saturday was held across the country. It was founded in 2010 by American Express and has been growing ever since.
The New Hartford Shopping Center has seen that growth from year to year.
Sam Colozzi, who owns Colozzi's Specialty Gifts and Collectibles, has been in business for 34 years and says this one day set aside each year to help small businesses is a huge help to all small business owners.
He says he enjoys the holidays, but as a business owner they are also stressful, "Extremely, extremely enjoyable, but also very nervous. You're fighting to treat the customers well, you're fighting to get that merchandise exposed, and your fighting to get enough business to pay the bills, that's the big one."
Laura Misiaszek, owner of the Olde Wicker Mill, says Small Business Saturday has brought a great spirit to this old cozy shopping center, "Such a wonderful feeling when everyone comes out to support us. The loyalty, they're still is loyalty, I think people still like to fee, touch, smell the fragrance of the season."
Sue Worden comes down from Ogdensburg each Thanksgiving week to visit family for the holiday. She says she always makes it a point to come shop on Small Business Saturday at the New Hartford Shopping Center, "I really enjoy it. I come down every year, come down 3 1/2 hours from here for Thanksgiving, my husband hunts, I shop and I really love coming here on Saturday and support the small business."
