Frankfort Center Fire Chief, Dave Miller, says the fire at the former Charles Town Mall Tuesday night had multiple points of origin and is being treated as suspicious.
"Right now it's an active crime scene and State Fire is in there doing their investigation," said Frankfort Town Police Officer in Charge, Matt Palumbo, Wednesday afternoon. State Fire investigators and K9s, "Ashes" and "Zena," spent about six hours at the scene Wednesday afternoon.
A passer by called 911 to report the fire around 7:00 Tuesday night. Smoke could be seen several miles away.
"This case is going to be particularly difficult given the nature of the building itself," said Herkimer County District Attorney, Jeffrey Carpenter. "It's been vacant for many, many years. It's been vandalized, there's been vagrants and squatters there throughout the 10 or so, 15 years that it's been vacant, so, it is going to be difficult, not impossible. We'll do our jobs and try to figure out who started that fire."
The building is privately and locally owned. Frankfort police say it was currently being used for storage.
It could be months before State Fire issues a final report, with a cause.
