WALTON, N.Y. -- An investigation has been launched into an officer-involved shooting in Delaware County.
New York State Police say a Walton village police officer shot 66-year-old Paul J. Weeden while responding to a mental health call on Griswold Street in Walton around 3:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 4.
According to police, the officer made contact with Weeden inside the residence. While they were speaking, Weeden pointed what was thought to be a gun at the officer. The officer asked Weeden to drop the weapon, but he pointed the suspected gun at the officer again, so the officer shot him.
The officer called emergency responders and tried to render aid to Weeden, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
State police and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are investigating the shooting.
