ONEONTA, N.Y. – New York State Police in Oneonta have been receiving reports of email scams where the sender demands a ransom.
Police say in the emails, there are threats to send sexually explicit videos of the recipient to all of their contacts and followers unless they pay a Bitcoin ransom.
The emails have contained personal information about the recipients, including their actual or similar passwords. However, police say these are fake emails, and anyone who receives one should avoid clicking any links and change their passwords as a precaution.
If you have sent money in what you believe to be a scam, contact state police or your local law enforcement.
