UTICA - Representatives from the Stevens-Swan Humane Society and The Community Foundation have announced plans to renovate the current SSHS building on Horatio Street.

The state-funded grant totals $373,500. It will go towards funding phase one of the two-phase renovation project. One of those planned improvements is a new surgical room.

"We will now have two medical beds… all the equipment that we need to properly evaluate these animals and get them comfortable until they are released into the general population. And within 48 hours they will be able to go up for adoption,” said SSHS board member Jackie Romano.

"We were able to take care of and package up the needs of not only intake of animals and increasing our capacity and ability to take in stray animals - but we were also able to comply with the proper regulations that are required for the proper handling, for the proper containment, for the proper latches everything to comply and receive this grant."

Phase two of the project is an investment of $500,000 by The Community Foundation. This will help the Humane Society focus on animal care, while the Foundation provides development support.

"We've got a half a million dollars that we are going to work, in partnership with The Community Foundation, so that we are positioned into the future," said Romano.

The renovations are scheduled to begin soon, and are expected to be complete in 2021.
