ROME, N.Y. – Teachers gathered at Stokes Elementary School in Rome Friday to say ‘goodbye’ to students for the year, and some retiring staff members – from a safe distance.
The retiring teachers road a firetruck past the front of the school, where other staff and students were waving and cheering.
In past years, sixth-grade students have traditionally had an end-of-the-year trip or picnic ahead of graduating to middle school, but this year they had to make some adjustments to the tradition.
“We missed the traditional wave at the end of the year, and I missed not having my last year at Stokes be all like it used to be,” said Lainy Cooney, a sixth-grader.
The last day of school for Stokes students will be June 17.
