NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. – A Utica man is facing multiple charges after allegedly breaking into two homes in New Hartford on Memorial Day.
New Hartford police say the suspect, later identified as 29-year-old Cody J. Darling, allegedly broke into a home on Chestnut Place around 7 a.m. Monday, while the owner was inside.
According to police, when the owner confronted Darling, he left the home and started walking down the street, leaving behind a backpack with multiple items later found to have been stolen from another home several houses away.
Police notified the second homeowner about the burglary, and reviewed security footage, which confirmed the suspect took the items and damaged a vehicle in the driveway.
Darling was found in Utica on Tuesday, June 1, and arrested.
He is charged with:
- Two counts of second-degree burglary
- Petit larceny
- Criminal mischief
Darling was arraigned and remanded to the Oneida County jail on $50,000 bail.
Police say additional charges may be filed.
