SYLVAN BEACH, N.Y. -- The Sylvan Beach Fire Department is hoping a creative "help wanted" sign will spark interest in firefighting.
The volunteer department has a sign outside the fire station that reads: Help wanted. Odd hours. No pay. Sweet helmet. .
Statewide there is always a need for volunteer fire fighters – many departments are faced with shortages.
Sylvan Beach is a resort town, and that poses its own unique challenges, especially in the winter months.
Chief Rick Johnson says they're forced to rely on neighboring departments this time of year, and a big concern is that more people than usual are ice fishing on Oneida Lake.
If you'd like to volunteer, he says simply check out their Facebook page.
