Syracuse, NY - Syracuse freshman quarterback Jacobian Morgan did not play Saturday after starting the last two games for the Orange. He went down with an injury in their November 20 game at Louisville.
Syracuse hasn't won a game since September 26. By the looks of freshman Trebor Pena's first quarter return, today could be the day they break a six game losing streak. He ran it 98-yards to the house to get on the board scoring the longest kickoff return for the Orange since 2011.
Early in the second quarter, Syracuse with a 3-point lead, Ifeatu Melifonwu forces the fumble and it’s picked up by sophomore linebacker Mikel Jones who earns his ACC--leading fourth interception of the season.
The Orange forced two takeaways to extend their national lead to 22.
Just over three minutes before the half, Syracuse third down. Rex Culpepper goes long - 60 yards long - and connects with Nykiem Johnson to take the lead back 20-14.
NC State’s quarterback Bailey Hockman would open up second-half scoring with a 31-yard passing touchdown to Thayer Thomas to make it a 22-20 game.
Syracuse’s Taj Harris caught a career-high 13 passes for 146 yards including a 13-yard touchdown pass from Culpepper with 5:49 left in the third quarter to take a 9-point lead.
This was a back and forth offensive battle. Wolfpack’s Thomas would score again late in the third to make it a 2-point game (again).
In the 4th quarter, NC State's Hockman finds Emeka Emezie in the end zone for the touchdown to take the lead for the first time in the second half.
NC State would hold Syracuse scoreless in the final frame to come back and win 36-29.
The Orange fall to a 1-9 record, 1-5 at home. Their lone win was a 17-point victory against Georgia Tech in the Carrier Dome on September 26 (the active roster looks much different since then).
In a normal season, this would have been their Senior Day game but due to the coronavirus pandemic, this season will not count toward eligibility so seniors will have the opportunity to return next year if they choose to do so.
