ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A powerful teachers' union will holding rallies at Republican state Senate district offices across New York to push for approval of legislation that would reform the state's teacher evaluation system.

New York State United Teachers is organizing rallies for Friday at the district offices of nine Senate GOP members in an effort to get Senate Leader John Flanagan to back the proposal.

The Democrat-controlled Assembly has passed legislation to rescind a requirement that teacher evaluations be tied to their students' performance on standardized tests.

Senate Republicans haven't fully backed the measure, but a compromise with the Assembly and Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo is possible before the 2018 legislative session ends next month.

NYSUT officials say truck-mounted billboards will be driven around the Capitol Wednesday to urge Flanagan to support the legislation.
