CHITTENANGO, N.Y. – The Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing facility in Chittenango has been fined $8,000 by the New York State Department of Health for infection prevention and control citations based on a complaint survey.
According to the health department, the facility was cited in May for failing to provide a safe, sanitary and comfortable environment to prevent the spread of COVID-19 for 14 out of 65 residents at the nursing home who had tested positive. There were 46 residents diagnosed with coronavirus in May alone. Since May, 10 residents at the facility have died.
The facility also failed to document specific preventative practices within its polices that would prevent the transmission of coronavirus.
Staff was also improperly trained, according to the report, and were not consistently washing their hands or wearing gloves while caring for residents.
The Chittenango facility sent corrections to the state, showing updated training plans and clearly stating the requirements for appropriate personal protective equipment when tending to residents.
The health department approved the new plan.
