UTICA, N.Y-- As the 2019 Boilermaker road race came to a close, thousands packed the Saranac Brewery for the after party.
Just a few hours before, the estimated 11,000 runners lined up on Culver Ave preparing for the area's largest race of the year.
Deerfield resident Joe Bushey was at the race with his daughter, this was his 20th road race.
"Everybody comes out here and has a great time and it puts that "U" back in Utica as the mayor likes to say," said Bushey.
Some of the volunteers arrived at the start line as early as 3 am on Sunday Morning.
Start line director Joe Langlois said that watching the corrals fill along Culver Ave. is quite the site.
"At 7:59 literally 11,000 people take up this entire street from where we are standing all the way up to the stars and all the way down across the bridge," said Langlois.
Once the race began, the runners weaved their way throughout the 9.3 or 3.1-mile course.
As the front runners in both the road race and the wheelchair race rounded the final corner and crossed the finish line, the post-race party at the brewery began.
A military flyover consisting of two F-16s roared over the Saranac brewery with thousands watching from above. The first time in nearly a decade that the U.S military participated in the flyover. The flyover tying a ribbon on yet another successful Boilermaker road race.
