ALBANY, N.Y. (UPDATED) – At his daily press briefing on Wednesday, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said that golf courses should not be open at this time under Gov. Andrew Cuomo's executive order to close non-essential businesses.
However, Empire State Development issued a statement that same day, saying "golf courses are open, under the same logic as parks and other open spaces — although it is important to understand that essential is not the same as business as usual."
Picente said it was “preposterous” to consider golf courses an essential business.
On Thursday, ESD issued new guidance that states golf courses are deemed non-essential and should be closed.
