Want to get outside and explore this fall? All New Yorkers are invited to participate in the 2020 Canalway Challenge, by traveling the Canalway trail to discover new places by reaching a certain mileage goal.
People can walk, run, bike or paddle to meet any travel goal from 15 to 360 miles, through the end of October.
Nearly 1,000 people have signed up for the challenge so far.
Anyone can register online, choose a goal and use a fitness app to track travel goals. Upon finishing, participants can take a photo and upload it to the website to receive a completion certificate, magnet, gear bag and sticker.
Participants can also find what’s ‘Hot on the Trail,’ by stopping at restaurants, parks and other landmarks during their ventures.
“Hot on the Trail adds a new element of discovery to the Canalway Challenge, while also supporting small businesses and attractions that have suffered from reduced visitation during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Bob Radliff, executive director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “It’s a win-win for both visitors and for small businesses and attractions that have reopened with safety protocols in place.”
People are encouraged to list their favorite sites in each category, for a chance to win a $50 gift card to the New York State Canal Store.
