ROME, N.Y. – Tri-Valley Pop Warner canceled the remainder of the season for some Utica, Rome and Oneida tackle football teams on Wednesday after fights erupted among spectators at various games earlier this month.
Tri-Valley President Alan Baird says the decision was made following a meeting of the Mohawk Valley Chapter of Certified Football Officials on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
Baird says the decision was based on “spectator actions” during one or more games on Sept. 12, 18 and 19.
A video circulating on social media shows a brawl among the crowd at a Rome game on Bell Road Sunday, Sept. 19. The video shows parents and other spectators throwing punches and shouting at each other.
The kids playing in the football game had to be pulled away from the violent scene by coaches and officials.
Baird says Tri-Valley and the football officials will reassess the situation in the spring.
Flag football and cheer will continue for the remainder of the season.
