UTICA – The Rome murder suspect who led police on a nationwide manhunt last summer appeared briefly in Oneida County Court on Friday.
Robert Coffin is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He’s accused of shooting 25-year-old Thomas Shepherd to death outside of Sammy G’s bar in Rome on Aug. 19, 2017. He was later found in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sept. 1.
Coffin was in court Friday for a brief appearance before his murder trial starts Monday. The attorneys indicates to the judge that the trial should last about one week.
“At this point I think somewhere in the range of 20 witnesses, mostly police officers,” said Oneida County Assistant District Attorney Michael Nolan. “There are eyewitnesses, yes.”
Jury selection will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. If timing allows, the defense and prosecution will make their opening arguments once the jury is seated on Monday.
