(NBC News) The FBI raided the office of the president's personal attorney Monday, looking for evidence about hush money paid to Stormy Daniels, the adult film star who claims she had an affair with Mr. Trump.
"It's a disgraceful situation. It's a total witch hunt," President Trump said after the raid.
According to the New York Times, emails, tax documents and business records were taken from the office and hotel room of Michael Cohen.
The search warrants were sought and executed by FBI agents and federal prosecutors in New York in coordination with special counsel Robert Mueller's team after an initial referral from Mueller's office.
Officials say the search warrants target $130,000 Cohen paid Daniels.
The court-ordered search means a federal judge found probable cause for the unannounced raid.
"The judge who approved that warrant cannot be fired. So this is now an investigation that has a life of its own," said Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut.
Cohen's attorney calls the raid "Completely inappropriate and unnecessary," claiming the FBI took privileged attorney-client information.
