On this Earth Day 2019 we are taking a look at ways to reduce, recycle and reuse, and taking a look at a composting company that serves the local community.

Melissa of CNY Green Cycle said as of April 2019, CNY Greencycle has recycled 15,078 pounds which is about 5,385 gallons worth of bites out of the landfill.

The average American throws away about a pound of food waste a day. These numbers of up to 1 pound a day add up quickly. CNY Green Cycle has a goal of 1,000 clients by 2025, which means the company could be taking around 364,000 pounds worth of food scraps out of the landfill every year from residential service alone and making the local landfill last longer.

Residents in Clinton, New Hartford and the Utica area can purchase five gallon buckets that are picked up biweekly to be composted.

People can also purchase compost from CNY Green Cycle for their gardens.

Food scraps that can be composted include meat, dairy and oil from salads as well as vegetables.

Larger amounts of cooking oil should be brought to the Oneida Herkimer Solid Waste Authority's Eco Drop.

Small compostable bags with OHSWA Compost and 'Clear the Air,' a new product that naturally takes away some of the odor of compost are now being sold by CNY Green Cycle.
