OLD FORGE, N.Y. --- Most people are used to seeing deer in Old Forge and if you're lucky a black bear. But a turkey named Harriette Thomasina has been the talk of the town up north. It's a turkey that thinks she's a human. She hangs out at the post office, greets the kids as they get off of the school bus, and bickers and fights with the "other turkey."
Bonnie Baker is that other turkey. She bought a turkey costume and wears it outside when she goes out to look for Harriette. She wanders around town with a turkey caller hoping to get a glimpse of her. But neighbors tell NEWSCHannel 2, Bonnie may like Hariette, but Hariette in no way like Bonnie.
"I put my caller on fight mode and she will come out of nowhere and chase me like a wild turkey."
And if you're passing through the village, it's quite the sight to see.
I think the locals see it as just typical of what's being done in Old Forge. But lord only knows what the people coming from outside think," said Linda Cohen.
Despite Hariette and Bonnie's love hat relationship, Bonnie does her best to look out for Hariette. The turkey tends to stand in the middle of Main street and when she does, it brings cars to a standstill. Bonnie usually moves her out of the way or directs traffic around her.
But Bonnie said she not only does this to promote the diverse wildlife that calls Old Forge home. She also does it to put a smile on people's faces in troubling times.
"It's a pandemic nobody can get out we're trying to make people smile in hard times and it's working," said Baker.
So if you do head into Old Forge, make sure to keep an eye out for Hariette.
