FRANKFORT, N.Y. --- Two kids in a Frankfort home were lucky to escape a fire on Litchfield St. The Frankfort Fire Department were called to the home late Saturday morning. When fire crews arrived they could see heavy smoke coming from the second floor of the home.
Homeowner Tina Zahniser tells NEWSChannel 2 two of her kids were home at the time of the fire and were able to make it out safely.
Litchfield Street in Frankfort was blocked off until crews were able to put out the fire.
Frankfort Fire Chief Eric Congilaro said the fire originated on the second floor.
"Crews arrived and found a fire on the second floor at the top of the stairs. Crews knocked it down pretty quick," said Conigliaro.
Neighbors lined the street and watched as firefighters put out the fire. All showing their support for Tina and her family.
"Frankfort is just one big family. We just had 100 people come out to us and ask us if we were OK. A lot of our friends are in the fire department that is here now. As long as everyone is healthy and happy, you can replace material items," said Zahniser.
The Fire Department is reporting extensive damage to the second floor of the home. The homeowners said they are going to try and fix the damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
