UTICA, NY – Gloves up, guns down. That was the message in downtown Utica Saturday.
The Utica Center for Development hosted an amateur youth boxing event at the New York Veterans Outreach Center’s newly renovated gymnasium.
The event featured 2 professional youth fighters from around New York, Boston, and Canada.
There were also 50/50 raffles, food and signed boxing memorabilia.
UCD’s Nicole Caquias says the goal of the event is to give area youth an alternative to a violent lifestyle.
“We actually lost a boxer to a stabbing on Varick Street this past summer. It means a lot to us to be able to get the youth to put down their weapons.”
Money raised from the Gloves Up Guns Down boxing tournament will be used to purchase equipment for the youth center and youth boxing programs.
