A student who is accused of making threats which caused the lockdown of Utica College has been arrested, according to police and college officials.

At a news conference Tuesday evening, Utica Police say 23-year-old Fahrudin Omerovic of Utica has been charged with felony making a terroristic threat. Police say Omerovic called in the threat multiple times on Monday and Tuesday, using a phone app to alter his area code.

Monday’s threats caused the college to be locked down for several hours while armored police officers went from building to building evacuating students and staff. Officials did not specify if the community was made aware of Tuesday’s threats prior to the 6:00 p.m. news conference.

Omerovic is a 2013 Proctor High School graduate who was taking courses at Utica College. He is being held at the Utica Police Department jail awaiting arraignment Wednesday morning.

Utica College posted a statement from President Laura Casamento on its Facebook page Tuesday evening. It reads:

I am pleased - and relieved - to announce that an arrest has been made in the threat against Utica College. According to the Utica Police Department, a Utica College student has been arrested and charged in the case. I'm sure that more details will be forthcoming, but will be released by the Utica Police Department.

Once again, I want to thank law enforcement for their dedication and hard work to ensure the safety of the Utica College community and to solve this case as quickly as they did. I also want to thank the Utica College community for all that you have done to cooperate with law enforcement and to support each other.

If convicted, a single charge of making a terroristic threat carries a possible penalty of 2-7 years in prison.
