History in the making. Utica College Men’s Ice Hockey won the UCHC championship for the second time in three seasons. The Pioneers outlasted Wilkes University for the title and have now won 20 games in a row.
The Adirondack Bank Center was packed with UC fans.
Utica would strike first when Dante Zapata puts one into the net and give UC a 1-0 lead to end the first period.
About 7 minutes into the second period, Jarrod Fitzpatrick finishes a great pass from Justin Allen. Pioneers go up 2-0.
Six minutes to go in the second frame, Jamie Bucell off the setup by Kasper Kjellkvist to score three unanswered goals by the pioneers.
Early in the third period, Buster Larrson, making things look easy puts the puck right passed Wilkes net minder Paterson-Jones for goal number 4 for Utica.They would have their way in this period, John Moncovich with the one-timer gives them 5 goals.
With 7 minutes remaining in regulation, junior left wing Conor Landrigan gets hold of the loose puck and lets it rip and into the back of the net.
Wilkes would score two goals of their own but the Pioneers would dominate from start to finish.
Utica College wins it 6 to 2 and is the 2020 UCHC champions. Dante Zapata was named tournament MVP.
They have earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. They will find out who they will face on Monday morning.
