UTICA.N.Y. — The Utica police union is backing incumbent Mayor Robert Palmieri in the mayoral race.

The union president calls Palmieri a dedicated member of the Police Benevolent Association.

The organization also noted his experience and leadership, which allows officers to get the necessary equipment to be one of the best law enforcement agencies in New York State.

The letter of endorsement reads as follows:

"This letter is to announce that the John E. Creedon Police Benevolent Association (Utica PBA) is proudly supporting incumbent Mayor Robert Palmieri for re-election in the 2019 Utica Mayoral contest.

Through his term Mayor Palmieri has been a dedicated supporter of the members of the PBA. His experience and passion for public safety and those that are sworn to uphold it are a testament to his character and ideals. Mayor Palmieri has been a staunch advocate for bettering the quality of life for the citizens of Utica, both in an individual capacity through his quality of life sweeps, and globally through his vision for a more prosperous and viable city overall.

We recognize that economic and social development and improvement are essential to the betterment of the City of Utica, not only in a business climate, but also on a grass roots neighborhood level. Public Safety and community partnerships are essential to keeping neighborhoods safe, and we applaud Mayor Palmieri for all that he has done to assist us with building the bridges with community leaders in our effort to promote safety and security for each citizen in Utica.

We also are very cognizant of what effect the City’s fiscal condition has on Public Safety. Since the hardships of 2012 when our organization lost several members due to layoffs and demotions, the Mayor has been in the forefront of stabilizing the City’s economic outlook. In turn, his leadership has allowed our members to have the equipment, training, and resources needed to be one of the best agencies in New York State. Having the proper training and outfitting has shown time after time to greatly enhance officer safety, and ensure that the services we provide to the community are at a level that the community has come to desire and expect. His oversight in these measures cannot be understated. This translates not only to the manning of a professional Police force for our citizens, but shows visitors and potential investors that Utica is a place that they can thrive, as well as be safe and prosperous.

We look forward to continuing to work with Mayor Palmieri on issues central not only to our members, but to the city as a whole. We are honored to have served with Mayor Palmieri and are committed to continuing the strong partnership that has been established with his administration."
