UTICA, N.Y. (UPDATED)-- A man has died following a shooting on James Street in Utica Tuesday night.
Police were called to the 100 block of James Street just before 8:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they found 42-year-old Cleastore Jefferson lying on the sidewalk suffering from several gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began first aid until the Utica Fire Department arrived and took over emergency care.
Jefferson was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he later died.
"The individual was struck a couple times in the leg and in the torso. We are waiting autopy results to find out exactly what contributed to his death, but certainly as a result of gunfire," said Sgt. Michael Curley.
The victim has not yet been identified as police work to notify the family.
Curley says police are still searching for the suspect.
"There is a person of interest who we have identified as a result of this shooting. We are actively looking for that individual and don't believe there's any danger to the public at this point," he said.
