A traffic stop for speeding turned into an arrest for gun possession, and ended with police taking two loaded handguns from the vehicle's occupants
Around 1:45 Sunday afternoon, Utica Police saw the driver of a black SUV speeding on James Street. The officer says he saw the driver commit addtional NYS vehicle and traffic violations. Police attempted to pull over the driver, who eventually pulled into a driveway on Seymour Ave. Utica Police say he was argumentative and non compliant. When police obtained the driver's identification, they learned privileges to drive had been suspended numerous times.
Police asked the driver and passenger to get out of the vehicle, and upon taking inventory of it, found a loaded 9mm handgun under the driver seat, and a loaded .40 caliber handgun under the passenger seat.
The driver, 33-year-old Sylester Collins, of Utica, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd and 3rd degree, criminal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of marijuana.
The passenger, 37-year-old Richard Greene, also of Utica, is charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the 2nd and 3rd degree, and criminal possession of a firearm.
