UTICA, N.Y. – The Utica Zoo was forced to close and cancel the rest of its afternoon event celebrating Rainforest Day on Wednesday after storms caused severe damage in and around the area.
Executive Director Andria Heath says all staff and animals are safe following the storm, but trees and debris are in and around the zoo.
The Rainforest Day event was supposed to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but the zoo closed around 2 p.m. following the thunderstorms. Kids participated in a scavenger hunt and interacted with some rainforest ambassador animals during the earlier part of the day.
The zoo will release more information on reopening on its social media accounts.
