UTICA, NY – A four-year-old boy has died from COVID-19, the youngest person to die from the virus in Oneida County.
Xavier M. Harris of Utica passed away the day after Christmas, according to his obituary. He will be laid to rest on Wednesday.
The Oneida County COVID-19 dashboard now reports one person in the under-17 age group has died. That report appeared for the first time on Monday.
A GoFundMe account was set up by a family friend, Brandie Reid, to help Xavier’s family pay for funeral expenses.
"I think this gives her meaning. It gives her purpose for her son's life, to spread the word, to get the word out there that COVID is real -- to be safe, wash your hands, wear masks," she said.
More than $20,000 was raised by the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 29.
"She just needs all the help she can get right now so that she can take care of her other two sons and keep moving forward. This will give her purpose to know that her son is helping people from wherever he may be right now," said Reid.
