Utica events see large crowds for Fourth of July celebrations

Thousands of people celebrated the Fourth of July in Utica.

UTICA, N.Y. - Thousands of people in Utica celebrated the Fourth of July.

The annual Fourth of July parade kicked off at Our Lady of Lourdes Church to start the holiday festivities.

The parade started down Genesee Street and made its way to the Memorial Parkway.

This years Grand Marshal, Barry Sinnott, says it was an honor to lead the Parade.

"Its an incredible honor, normally I'm watching the parade on the side of the street with my kids, but marching down the center of the parade is something I never thought would happen so I'm very honored to be doing this," Sinnott said.

Other spectators say the parade is always a good time.

"Well we brought the grand-kids, they've been staying with us for the summer and we thought we would just bring them down for a good time," Bonnie Miller from Utica said.

Representatives like Congressman Anthony Brindisi and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon were apart of the parade, as were some familiar faces from NEWS Channel 2.

The holiday events ended at Proctor Park for the annual Party in the Park celebration.

Some families attend the celebration every year, and others were there for the first time.

"This is our first time actually as a family in Proctor Park," Phillip Cox said. "We're having a great time today, glad to come out, and its fantastic, glad that we got a beautiful day, a lot of sun, no rain so we're just happy to have some good food and spend some time together."

Some people were there to enjoy live music, food, and fireworks, but for others, celebrating the Fourth of July means so much more.

"It means freedom for the country and all the people that do a great job protecting us," Stefan Rubitski from Utica said.
