UTICA, N.Y. – A commemoration ceremony was held in Utica Friday, to remember those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Utica officials and members of the police department gathered at the 9/11 memorial on Memorial Parkway, to read the names of service members who died on Sept. 11, 2001.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was closed to the public, following the state’s mass gathering restrictions.
Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said although it wasn’t the normal remembrance ceremony, it was important to find a way to honor those who died.
“Being that we are going through the COVID -19, this ceremony -- you can't ever forget it, which we will never,” said Palmieri. “But it was not at the level that we usually have. It's much more involved than you see today.”
Family members of local first responders were also invited to come lay flowers at the memorial.
