Utica man admits to transporting, possessing child porn

A Utica man has pleaded guilty to transporting and possessing child pornography, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

A Utica man has pleaded guilty to transporting and possessing child pornography, according to a news release from the Department of Justice.

Shawn Bunnell, 35, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of transportation of child pornography via the internet, and one count of possession of child pornography.

As part of his guilty plea, Bunnell admitted that between May 30, 2017 and Aug. 15, 2017, he transported a number of file images that depicted minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct through computer servers maintained by Google and Dropbox, according to the release. Bunnell also admitted to possessing several video files depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct on his phone.

Also as part of his guilty plea, Bunnell admitted that on March 27, 2003 he was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse for sexually abusing a child under the age of 11. He was sentenced to five years in prison and thee years of post-release supervision, and he had to register as a sex offender.

According to the news release, if the court accepts the plea agreement that was arranged, Bunnell will be sentenced to serve 50 years in prison followed by a lifetime of supervised release. He will also have to register as a sex offender once again.

Bunnell is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 10, 2019. He remains detained until then.
