UTICA, N.Y. - The Utica man accused of murdering his girlfriend’s seven-month-old baby has been indicted by an Oneida County grand jury.
Jason Nieves, 22, is officially charged with second-degree murder.
Utica police and fire departments responded to a home on Walker Street for a report of an unresponsive child on January 20, 2018. Authorities said responding officers found seven-month-old Emelina Sanchez with faint vital signs and possible head injuries, and she was transported to St. Luke’s hospital for treatment.
After being transferred to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, Emelina died from her head injuries the next day.
Police said Nieves allegedly caused the baby’s head injuries in response to her crying uncontrollably.
