This morning Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri presented a check for $15,050 to the Mohawk Valley Health System’s Breast Care Center.
The money was raised by the mayor’s annual Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon in October, which was attended by nearly 300 people.
The Breast Care Center sees about 200 patients each year. And while the center is seeing more patients, it’s also seeing those patients live longer because of early detection.
“Because there's more awareness of screening and early detection, we’re actually seeing women at an earlier age stage, so the incidence of mortality is decreasing,” said Nancy Butcher, executive director of the MVHS cancer program.
The money donated to the Breast Care Center can help patients who need financial assistance, or any other expenses at the center.
