UTICA, N.Y. – A block on West Street in Utica has been named ‘Block of the Month’ as part a new initiative to recognize residents who take good care of their neighborhood.
City workers, joined by Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri, put up a sign on Thursday morning designating the 1100 block the ‘Block of the Month.’
Palmieri said this block of West Street sets an example for all residents.
"As we've been doing this over the years, we’ve seen where it has changed into an area that really represents what we’re trying to accomplish throughout the city,” he said. “And if it can be done here, it can be done throughout our entire city.”
The city will continue to choose other blocks to receive the designation each month, in an effort to encourage people to take pride in where they live.
“And we’re just proud of the neighbors here that take so much pride in their neighborhood, and are an exceptional breed of people, that really is symbolic of what we’re trying to accomplish throughout the city,” said Palmieri.
The community can also recommend particular blocks that deserve to be highlighted by contacting the city of Utica.
