UTICA -- The night before Thanksgiving is considered one of America’s biggest drinking days of the year.
Blackout Wednesday is the term associated with binge drinking the night before thanksgiving, since many people don't have to work on the holiday.
The Utica police department is working to make sure people stay safe and out of trouble.
UPD is cracking down on bars and keeping an eye out for drunk drivers. Members of the department say being aware of what's going on is important to keep the community safe.
"People, they're on vacation essentially for these holidays," Sergeant Josh Grande said. "People are coming in from out of the area. They don't have to work in the morning which usually leads to drinking a little more in excess because you can sleep it off a little more in the morning.”
Police say if you are going to drink, make sure to have a plan on how you're going to get home. They say to use Uber or call a friend to come get you.
UPD says it's ok to go out and have fun they just want to make sure that you're safe doing it.
