UTICA, N.Y. – The Great American Irish Festival has officially been canceled, due to state coronavirus restrictions still in effect on mass gatherings.
The next festival is expected to take place on Sept. 17, 2021, in the Brewery District.
"Obviously we didn't want to cancel, but we were forced to with everything in terms of a mass gathering permit. You can't actually obtain one at the moment. So, it was really an easy decision," said Patrick McGrath, co-director of the Great American Irish Festival.
The festival board is working with the Irish Cultural Center to determine the feasibility of holding smaller events during the weekend of Sept. 19-21 in place of the festival.
The Great American Irish Festival Facebook page will be updated with any new developments.
Two other annual Irish celebrations in the area, the Central New York Irish Festival and the Syracuse Irish Festival, have also been canceled.
