UTICA – The Utica Fire Department appointed two new members on Tuesday morning. Joshua Edwards and Gabriel Grann were sworn in during a short ceremony at City Hall.
Edwards is headed to the academy for a 14-week training program, while Grann has already gone through MVCC’s program and will receive three weeks of additional training.
Utica Fire Chief Scot Ingersoll says bringing new recruits on board refreshes the entire department.
"The good thing is that new guys coming in reinvigorates everybody, makes them look back on their training; and when we get new recruits into the fire houses we all have to start back at square one with them, and make sure they're up to where they need to be in our standards and everything," he said.
Ingersoll says he hopes there will be more firefighters appointed in the near future. The department currently has 122 firefighters, and Ingersoll says they will be at fully strength with 124.
