HERKIMER – Valley Health Services in Herkimer broke ground today on a much-needed expansion.
Valley Health Services provides care-free senior living for people 62 years old and older, which includes help with meals, medications, laundry and transport to appointments. When their current assisted living and enriched housing project, which was built in 2014, was full within a year, they saw the urgent need for more space.
“But it's about social isolation, that's the real silent killer for a senior,” said Lisa Betris, president of Valley Health Services. “And environments like this, they deal with the medical needs, but they deal with the social isolation needs and they eliminate them and it changes the course for many people.”
The expansion includes 14 new one-bedroom apartments, which are all large enough for couples, and a fully-staffed wellness and fitness center that’s available for use by all Valley Health residents.
A $300,000 grant from the Community Foundation helped Valley Residential Services meet their goal for the project.
Work got underway immediately after today’s groundbreaking, and the addition is expected to be complete in summer 2018.
