Luckily only minor injuries reported in Vernon last night. Sheriff's officials say a driver tried to pass two vehicles just before coming to a hill, then had to swerve to avoid oncoming traffic.
It happened around 8:15pm Saturday night on State Route 5 near the Black Stallion Restaurant. Route 5 was closed for several hours from Route 26 to Churton Road.
Oneida County Sheriff's Officials say 20-year-old Devonte Dixon of Utica, driving an SUV, was heading west on Route 5 when he crossed the double yellow lines into the eastbound lane in order to pass two other vehicles. As Dixon was passing the vehicles he approached a hillcrest and was unable see oncoming traffic. Sheriff's officials say he then struck an sSUV driven by a 77-year-old man from Whitesboro. That man's 75 year old passenger suffered cuts to her hand. Dixon lost control of his vehicle and struck a utility pole. He, nor the 77-year-old driver were injured. Dixon was issued 5 traffic tickets.
