VERNON CENTER, N.Y. – The Vernon Center Fire Department has been collecting donations for the mother and two daughters displaced after their home exploded in Vernon Center.
The fire department recently set up the Alexis Peckham Benefit Fund to raise more money for the young girls, ages 2 and 5. Donations can be made at all branches of Community Bank.
The girls were released from the hospital on Wednesday after suffering burn injuries when their home exploded in the Quiet Valley Trailer Park on Dec. 1.
Their 21-year-old mother is still in the hospital and is expected to have an upcoming surgery.
Investigators are still looking for the cause of the fire, focusing on the kitchen area.
The explosion appears to be accidental.
The American Red Cross has been assisting the family, and the Vernon Center Fire Department says several clothing items were donated throughout the week.
